Q

Hot chisel and board docking method

A

Heat prevents bleeding (excessive) - sterilize
Longer than other methods to heal
Can’t use for castrating (will need two different tools)

Q

Advantages for castrating

A

1) Run ewes and wethers together
2) Higher dressing percent (not really an advantage because increased yield will be FAT)
3) Highest quality meat
4) No discrimination by buyer
5) No chance of lamb not making market weight before reaching sexual maturity (approx. 6-8 mo). Wethers can go as feeders - rams can’t

Q

Reasons for not castrating

A

1) 5-7% faster ADG and feed efficiency than wethers
2) Carcass yields greater % lean cuts
3) Reach market earlier

16
Q

The burdizzo castrating method

A
  1. ) Crushes spermatic cord

2. ) But may miss a cord, therefore have a ram

17
Q

The elastrator castrating method

A
  1. ) Bloodless
  2. ) Certainty of getting both testicles
  3. ) Painful for a day or 2
  4. ) Limited to 1-2wk of age
18
Q

A male born with one or both testicles lying in the body cavity (failing to descend into the scrotum)

A

Cryptorchids

19
Q

Induced cryptorchid?

A

Rubber band used to push and hold testicles in the body cavity until the scrotum falls off. Then testicles remain in the body cavity which is 3-5 degrees F warmer than in scrotum, which kills sperm making individual sterile
But it has all characteristics of intact ram (testosterone production)
Therefore ADG, FE and carcass characteristics = to ram

20
Q

ADG (Rams vs ewes vs wethers)

A

R > W > E

21
Q

FE (Rams vs ewes vs wethers)

A

R > W > E

22
Q

DP (Rams vs ewes vs wethers)

A

E > W > R

23
Q

Fatness (Rams vs ewes vs wethers)

A

E > W > R
