What does your computer do before it goes to a DNS server?
It looks internally for the mapping information that it keeps in the filling system
What internal files do computers use in windows to map to an IP address?
Hosts files
What are top level domain nodes?
.com,.org, .net etc
What are domain nodes (aka domain zones)
.google.com
What is a sub domain?
play.google.com
What does DNS use to make the service quicker?
Delegation. Some DNS servers may be delegated as .com, some as .org etc
What does an A record and an AAAA record do?
(Address records)
A - provides mapping between an ipv4 address and host name.
AAAA- Same as above but for IPV6
What does a CNAME record do?
Canonical record is correct and proper name for a server. Records alias so can be directed to correct site eg: goole.com to .i.goole.com
What does a MX record do?
Mail exchange record. Records a list of mail servers for that domain
What is a PTR record?
Opposite of an A record. If you provide IP address it will map to name. Used for reverse lookups
What is an NS record?
Name server record. NS records map a domain name to a list of DNS servers which are authoritative for that domain.
What is a SOA record?
Start of authority record. Indicates that this DNS server is the best source of information for the data within the DNS
What does a SOA record contain?
- Email address of the person responsible for administering the domain zone file.
- Name of host where the file was created
