DNA_RNA Flashcards
Chromosomes
A threadlike structure within a cell’s nucleus that contains DNA that is passed from one generation to the next
Double Helix
The shape of a DNA molecule
Nitrogen Bases
Molecules that contain Nitrogen and other elements
Adenine
A compound that is one of the four constituent bases of nucleic acid. Usually paired with Thymine in double-stranded DNA
Thymine
A compound that is one of the four constituent bases of nucleic acid. Usually paired with Adenine in double-stranded DNA
Guanine
A compound that is one of the four constituent bases of nucleic acid. Usually paired with Cyrosine in double-stranded DNA
Cytosine
A compound that is one of the four constituent bases of nuclei can acid. Usually paired with Guanine in double-stranded DNA
Gene
A sequence of DNA that determines a trait and is passed from parent to offsprings
DNA replication
Before a cell divides, the process in which DNA copies itself
RNA
Ribonucleic acid, a nucleic acid present in all living cells. It’s principal role is to act as a messenger carrying instructions from DNA for controlling the synthesis of proteins, although in some viruses RNA rather than DNA carries the genetic information.
Uracil
A compound found in living tissue as a constituent base of RNA. In DNA it’s place is taken by thymine
DNA
Deoxyribonucleic acid; the genetic material that carries information about an organism and is passed from parent to offspring
