Chemical Compounds Flashcards
Compound
A thing that is composed of two or more seperate elements; a mixture
Element
a part or aspect of something abstract, especially new that is essential or characteristic.
Organic compound
Is any ember of a large class of gaseous, liquid, or solid chemical compounds whose molecules contain carbon
Inorganic compound
A compound that is not considered “organic”. Inorganic compounds are traditionally viewed as being synthesized by the agency of geological systems. In contrast, organic day stems are found in biological systems
Carbohydrates
Any large group of organic compounds occurring in foods and living tissues and including sugars, starch, and glucose. They contain hydrogen and oxygen in the same ratio as water.
Lipid
Any of a class of organic compounds that are fatty acids or their derivatives and are insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents. They include many natural oils, waxes, and steroids.
Protein
Any of a class of nitrogenous organic compounds that consist of large molecules composed of one or more long chains of amino acids and are an essential part of all living organisms, especially as structural components of body tissues such as muscle, hair, collagen, ect.
Enzyme
A substance produced by a living organism that acts as a catalyst to bring about a specific biochemical reaction.
Nucleic acid
A complex organic substance present in living cells, especially DNA or RNA, whose molecules consist of many nucleotides linked in a long chain.
DNA
Deoxyribonucleic acid, a self-replicating material present in nearly all living organisms as the main constituent of chromosomes. It is the carrier of genetic information.
The fundamental and distinctive characteristics or qualities of someone or something, especially when regarded as unchangeable
