DNA virus Flashcards
What are the enveloped dsDNA viruses?
Hepadnaviruses, Herpesviruses, and Poxviruses
What are the naked dsDNA viruses?
Adenoviruses and Papovaviruses
What are the naked ssDNA viruses?
Parvoviruses
It is an enveloped dsDNA virus, has the largest genome and causes eruptive skin ruptures.
Poxviruses
What are the diseases under poxviruses?
Smallpox and Molluscum Contagiosum
The first disease to be eliminated by vaccination, it causes fever, malaise, and rash and is transmitted by inhalation and skin contact.
Smallpox
It is caused by unclassified poxvirus, an infection of children, transmitted by direct contact and fomites. AID patients suffer atypical form.
Molluscum Contagiosum
This virus shows latency and causes recurrent infection, large enveloped icosahedra dsDNA, replication in the nucleus and has 8 families.
Herpesviridae
What are the 8 families under Herpesviridae?
HSV-1, HSV-2, VZV, EBV, CMV, HHV-6, HHV-7, and HHV-8
What are the diseases under HSV-1?
Herpes labialis, Herpetic gingivostomatitis, and Herpetic keratitis.
This disease causes cold sores and fever blisters.
Herpes labialis
This disease causes infection of the oropharynx in young children and symptoms such as fever, sore throat, and swollen lymph nodes.
Herpetic gingivostomatitis
This disease causes ocular herpes
Herpetic keratitis
Which type of herpes causes genital herpes?
HSV-2
This disease causes malaise, fever, anorexia, and painful urination.
Herpes genitalia
This disease is caused by HSV-1 and HSV-2, fatal for the newborn and neonate, contaminated by the mother before or during birth, hand transmission by mother to infant, and infection of mouth, skin, eyes, and CNS.
Herpes of the newborn
What are the treatment and control for herpes?
No cure for herpes but treatments can relieve the symptoms. Medication can decrease pain and shorten the healing time.
People with active symptoms of herpes should avoid oral contact with others and sharing objects that have contact with saliva.
Abstain from sexual activity whilst experiencing symptoms of genital herpes.
This virus causes chicken pox and shingles and is transmitted by respiratory droplets and contact.
VZV
This virus infects the lymphoid tissue and salivary glands, and is transmitted by direct oral contact and contamination with saliva.
EBV
What are the diseases caused by EBV?
Mononucleosis and Burkitt’s lymphoma
This virus produces giant cells with nuclear and cytoplasmic inclusions (owl’s eyes) and is transmitted in saliva, respiratory mucus, milk, urine, semen, cervical secretions, and faeces.
CMV
This virus causes perinatal CMV infection, newborns may exhibit enlarged liver and spleen, jaundice, capillary bleeding, microcephaly, and ocular inflammation.
CMV
T-lymphotropic virus, transmitted by close contact, causes roseola (skin rash), and can cause encephalitis and cancer.
HHV-6
It is an enveloped dsDNA virus, has an unusual genome containing both double and single-stranded DNA, and tropism for liver.
Hepadnaviruses
Inflammatory disease of liver cells, interferes with the liver’s excretion of bile pigments, and bilirubin accumulates in blood and tissue causing jaundice.
Hepatitis
This virus multiplies exclusively in the liver, sexually transmitted, blood can transmit infection, high incidence among homosexuals and drug addicts, it can become a chronic infection and increases the risk of liver cancer.
Hepatitis B virus
What are the treatment and control of Hepatitis B virus?
Chronic infection is controlled with interferon, HB immune globulin protects exposed people and HBV vaccine.
What virus causes papilloma, a benign squamous epithelial growth, wart or verruca and is transmissible through direct contact or contaminated fomites?
Papillomavirus
What are the diseases caused by papillomavirus?
Common seed warts (fingers), Plantar warts (soles of feet), and Genital warts (prevalent STD).
Which disease is the most common STD in the US and has a strong association with cervical and penile cancer?
Genital warts
It is a naked icosahedral ssDNA, B19, and causes the fifth disease.
Parvoviruses
Which viruses support involvement in cancer?
Papillomaviruses, EBV, and Hepatitis (A, B, C).
