DNA structure Flashcards
What does DNA stand for?
Deoxyribonuleic acid
Is DNA a double or a single helix?
Double
What is the basic unit of DNA, and what is it made out of?
The basic unit of DNA is nucleotide.
Nucleotide is made out of:
Phosphate, deoxyribose (sugar), nitrogenous base.
Name the 4 types of nitrogenous base
Adenine (A)
Thymine (T)
Guanine (G)
Cytosine (C)
Describe the DNA molecule
DNA is made of two linked strands that wind around each other to resemble a twisted ladder—a shape known as a double helix.
Explain the base pairing rule
The base paring rule dictates how the bases are linked to each other.
In DNA, adenine is always paired with thymine, and guanine is always paired with cytosine.
Relate nitrogenous bases & nucleotide
A nucleotide consists of a sugar molecule ( deoxyribose DNA) attached to a phosphate group and a nitrogen-containing base.
