DNA replication Flashcards
What is semi-conservative replication?
For dna replication, the double helix structure unwinds, meaning hydrogen bonds holding bases break.
Free dna nucleotides pair up with complementary bases and hydrogen bonds form between them. Finally, new nucleotides join to adjacent nucleotides with phosphodiester bonds.
What enzyme is involved in unwinding and separating of the two strands of dna?
DNA helicase
What enzyme is involved in forming the phosphodiester bonds between the newly formed strand of DNA?
DNA polymerase
Go over the process of DNA replication-
-A strand of DNA is separate by DNA helicase
-separation is completed, free nucleotides are attracted to complementary bases
-activated nucleotides begin to join together by DNA polymerase
-Two identical molecules of DNA formed, each strand is composed of one original strand and one newly formed strand (semi-conservative)
