DNA Flashcards
What are the 4 bases of dna?
A - adenine
G - guanine A-T
C - cytosine C-G
T - thymine
What is the shape of dna and what holds them together?
Dna is in the shape of a double helix and they’re held together by weak hydrogen bonds.
What are chromosomes?
Are long coiled up molecules of dna. Found in nucleus.
What are genes?
It is a section of dna on a chromosome that codes for a particular protein , the sequence of bases determines what protein
How do you extract dna from fruit cells?
- Crush strawberries an put in a beaker with salt and detergent.
- Filter mixture to receive insoluble bits
- Add some ice cold alcohol
- The dna will come out of the solution , (white precipitate)
- Take it out using a glass rod
What is the point of detergent, salt and ice cold alcohol?
Detergent - breaks down cell membrane and releases the DNA
Salt - makes DNA stick together
Ice cold alcohol - makes the solution insoluble
