DNA Flashcards
Where is DNA found?
In the nucleus
What is DNA?
A chemical which contains genetic material
What is DNA structurally?
A polymer made up of many monomers called nucleotides
What is a nucleotide made up of?
One sugar molecule
One phosphate molecules
4 types of organic bases
What is each DNA molecule made up of?
2 DNA strands (sugar phosphate backbone) which are twisted together. Each base connects another base to another strand with hydrogen bonds
What are the bases held together by?
Weak hydrogen bonds
What are the 2 complementary base pairs?
A = T
C = G
Why is the order of the different bases important?
Because it forms a genetic code
What is the overall visual structure of DNA?
A double helix
How is DNA condensed to fit into the cell?
It is packaged tightly in coils with proteins in a chromosome.
What are the bases held together by?
Weak hydrogen bonds
What is a chromosome?
A long thread of DNA
What is a gene?
A small section of DNA in a chromosome
What does a gene code for?
Each gene codes for a particular sequence of amino acids in order to make a specific protein
CORE PRACTICAL: How do you extract DNA from fruit? (6 steps)
- Crush fruit
- Add detergent
- Heat to 60’C in a water bath
- Filter the mixture
- Add ethanol
- Remove DNA which forms as a precipitate
