DNA Flashcards
lBe ready for test
DNA
: Deoxyribonucleic acid, a molecule that carries the genetic instructions used in the growth, development, functioning, and reproduction of all known living organisms
RNA
Ribonucleic acid, a molecule that is transcribed from DNA and is involved in protein synthesis
Chromosomes
Thread-like structures located inside the nucleus of animal and plant cells, consisting of DNA and protein; they are the carriers of genes
Genes
Small sections of DNA that are the basic physical and functional units of heredity, containing the instructions for making proteins and determining traits
Double Helix
The structure of DNA, resembling a twisted ladder, formed by two strands of nucleotides held together by hydrogen bonds
Allele
One of two or more versions of a gene that are found at the same place on a chromosome and that control the same characteristic
Nucleotide
The basic building block of nucleic acids, such as DNA and RNA, consisting of a sugar, a phosphate group, and a nitrogenous base
Protein
Large, complex molecules that play many critical roles in the body, including providing structure, regulating processes, and serving as enzymes
Genetic information
Information about an individual’s genetic tests
Deoxyribose
A simple sugar that forms the backbone of DNA molecules
DNA Strands
Long chains of deoxyribonucleic acid that carry genetic information in the form of a code made up of four nitrogenous bases: adenine, thymine, guanine, and cytosine
Hydrogen Bonds
Chemical bonds that connect the two strands of DNA, holding them together in a double helix structure
Ribosome
A large complex of RNA and protein that plays a central role in protein synthesis
Cytoplsm
The jelly-like substance found inside a cell, excluding the nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles
nucleous
A membrane-bound organelle in eukaryotic cells that contains most of the cell’s genetic material, including DNA
