How is Type I DM diagnosed? Does it require a glucose tolerance test?

- Polydipsia
- Polyuria
- Polyphagia
- Weight loss 200
- urine ketones +/-

If a type I DM pt is vomiting and cannot take fluid, should you stop insulin?
A
NO! It must be continued.

What are dehydrated type I Diabetics at risk of? Does it matter what the blood glucose is?
A
at risk for DKA even if blood glucose levels are not markedly elevated

What is the most important treatment for DKA?
A
- Fluid therapy!
- monitor electrolytes every 2-4 hours
- K+ should be given to replenish depleted K+
- Insulin (slow drip to drop BG 100/hour)
- sodium bicarb

How should you NEVER give sodium bicarbonate?
A
NEVER through IV push!

Cerebral edema
