International Law
Laws that govern the relationships between states (countries) and in the international community.
Domestic Law
The laws governing activity within the boarders of a country, like Canada.
What are the 2 types of Domestic Law?
Substantive and Procedural
Substantive Law
Consists of all the laws that list the obligations and rights of each person in society.
Procedural Law
Outlines the steps involved in order to protect the substantive law.
Public Law
Controls the relationship between the government and the people who live in society.
Criminal Law
It is a set of rules passed by parliament that defines acts called “crimes” ex murder, break and enter.
Constitutional Law
The government does not have unlimited power ex being arrest without reason at a public event.
Administrative Law
The area of law that governs the relationships between citizens and government agencies ex (LCBO), Canada post, Parks Canada.
Private Law
Outlines the legal relationships between citizens and between citizens, and organizations.
Family Law
Deals with the relationships between individuals living together as spouses or partners, and between parents and children ex divorce.
Contract Law
Outlines the requirement for legally binding agreements ex giving money to a store to buy items.
Tort Law
Deals with wrongs, other than breach of contract one person commits against another person ex ice on someone’s driveway.
What are the 2 types of Tort Law?
Intentional and Unintentional
Property Law
It is a set of legal rules that controls the use, enjoyment and rental of property ex destroying someone’s bike.
Labour/Employment Law
Governs the relationships between employers and employees ex wages, pay equity, proper dismissal, and working conditions.
Wills and Estates Law
Deals with the division of property after death ex giving a grandson the house/apartment.
