One of the first written legal code, an eye for an eye, perjury outlawed.
Mosaic Law (1240 BCE)
Emphasis on leading moral and religious life, denounce god death by stoning, punishment reserved for individuals.
Greek Law (1000BCE)
Ousted monarchy for direct democracy laws admin’s through courts, ex murder = exile, property damage = fine, verdicts by jury system.
Roman Law (100-400 CE)
Justinians code, constitutional law, executive, legislative, judiciary, lawyers were born, ex: contract law, birth of modern lawyer.
St Augustine (400CE)
Formed Catholic Church, ex: all people sin, need relationship with God, church and state argued that educations was means to an end.
England and William the Conqueror (1066-1089)
Common law, ex: all people, all courts all cases, judges determined precedent/case law.
England and the Magna Carta (King John 1215)
Pact between king and social elite requiring respect for rights, non abuse of power, 1689 parliament passed bill of rights.
France and Napoleon (1800 post revolution)
Honoured equal rights (not women), equal laws, ex: commercial, criminal, civil law as property and family, heavily influenced Civil Code of Quebec (1866).
