Small bulges or pockets develop in lining of intestine

A
Pockets that have developed become inflamed or infected

A
Lower abdominal pain
Constipation
Diarrhoea

Treatment
A
High fibre diet
Bulk-forming laxatives
Paracetamol (abdominal pain)
Antispasmodic, e.g. mebeverine (cramps)

Management - acute diverticulitis
A
- Co-amoxiclav
- Cefalexin 500 mg (BD/TDS) + Metronidazole (400 mg TDS)
