What is the main piece of legislation protecting individuals against discrimination in the UK?
Equality Act 2010
What are the 9 protected characteristics?
Age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage/civil partnership, pregnancy/maternity, race, relgion/belief, sex and sexual orientation
What is direct discrimination?
Treating someone less favourably because of protected characteristics
What is indirect discrmination?
Applying a practice that disadvantages people with protected characteristics unless it can be justified as a proportionate means of achieving legitimate aim.
What is harassment?
Unwanted conduct related to protected characteristic that violates someone’s dignity or creates and intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment.
What is victimisation?
Treating someone badly because they have made or supported a complaint of grievance under the act.
What does the Equality Act 2010 do?
Consolidates and streamlines various antidiscrimination laws e.g. DDA into single legal framework. Helps enforce equality rights and protections better.
What is the inclusive employer quality mark (IEQM) and what does it do?
Initiative set up by RICS to change behaviour and encourage firms to look carefully at their employment practices and put inclusivity at heart of what they are doing.
