What is workplace diversity?
Company that hires a wide range of diverse individuals.
Not solely multicultural, includes diversity of gender, race, ethnicity, language, sexuality etc
Race vs ethnicity
Race - dividing people into groups often based on physical characteristics.
Ethnicity - cultural expression and identification of people.
What does inclusion in the workplace mean to you?
Achievement of a work environment in which all individuals are treated fairly and respectfully, and have equal access to opportunity and resources.
Difference between diversity and inclusion??
Diversity = the characteristics that make us all different.
Inclusion = making everyone feel welcome.
What is unconscious bias?
The underlying attitudes and stereotypes that people unconsciously attribute to another person or group of people that affect how they engage with a person or group.
Difference between team and a committee?
A committee is a body of people appointed for a function
A team is a group of people aiming for a common goal in good spirit.
What is Tuckman’s Theory?
Tuckman’s theory focuses on the way in which a team tackles a task from the initial formation of the team until the completion of the task or project.
What are the 5 key stages of Tuckman’s Theory?
Forming
Storming
Norming
Performing
Adjourning
What is meant by team dynamics?
The behavioural relationships between members of a group. How they interact, communicate and cooperate with each other.
Difference between leadership and management in teamwork?
Leadership = setting a new direction for a group. A leader is the spearhead for the new direction.
Management = controls people in a group according to principles or values that have already been established.
What are inclusive environments?
An inclusive environment recognises and accommodates differences in the way people use the built and natural environment.
Inclusive environments readily accommodate and welcome diverse needs.
What is discrimination?
The unjust treatment of different categories of people, especially on the grounds of race, religion, age, sex or disability l.
Any Building Regulations relevant to inclusive environments?
Approved Document Part M - Access to and use of buildings.
What is the Equality Act 2010?
A discrimination law which protects individuals from unfair treatment and promotes a fair and equal society.
The Act provides a legal framework to protect the rights of individuals and advance equality of opportunity for all.
What are protected characteristics under the Act??
It is against the law to discriminate against someone because of:
Age
Disability
Gender reassignment
Marriage and civil partnership
Pregnancy and maternity
Race
Religion and belief
Sex
Sexual orientation
