Diversity Flashcards
• The other side of affirmative action: Reactions of nonbeneficiaries to sex-based preferential selection• Mitigating effects of particular justifications limited to situations in which benficieary and nonbeneficiary were believed to be equal• Participants felts as deserving of the leadership position when provided with no information above relative ability as when provided with clear information of superior ability• Simply providing ideological accounts about past harm done to legitimize negative outcomes does not necessarily neutralize the injustice experience (equal-groups only)• Attending to the concerns of both nonbeneficiaries and beneficiaries of AA is crucial in efforts to integrate women into the workforce
Heilman et al. 1996
• Examined relationships between perceptions of support for AA/EO, distributive and procedural justice, career development opportunities, and work attitudes in White men, White women, Blacks/Hispanics and Asians• White men did NOT associate support for AA/EO with a loss in career development opportunities, org injustice or negative work attitudes• For women and racial-ethnic minorities – support for AA/EO was positively linked to perceptions of org injustice and increased career development opportunities• Blacks/Hispanics had more positive reactions than other groups• Generally, no evidence that AA/EEO negatively affected White men’s attitudes• Orgs with Afirmative Action perceived as fair
