Diuretics - Van Rijn Flashcards
Diuresis
Increase in urine volume
Natriuresis
Increase in renal sodium excretion
How does natriuresis cause diuretics
Water follows the sodium into the urein
How do diuretics work?
They remove sodium and water from the body/blood (reduced plasma volume, cardiac output, and BP)
What are 5 types of diuretics?
- Acetazolamide
- Osmotic diuretics
- Loop diuretics
- Thiazides
- Potassium-sparing
What 3 diuretics are useful in treating HTN?
- Loop
- Thiazides
- Potassium-sparing
What are the 3 regions of the loop of henle?
- Descending limb
- Thin ascending limb
- Thick ascending limb
What cells secrete renin?
Juxtaglomerular cells
Where is the Na-K-Cl cotransporter (NKCC2) located?
Kidneys
Where is the Na-K-Cl cotransporter (NKCC1) located?
Throughout the body (including the inner ear!)
Loop diuretics ____ renal blood flow
increase
What drug(s) do(es) furosemide interact with?
NSAIDS
What is the threshold dose for loop diuretics?
40x creatinine IV
When should you switch patients to lasix from thiazides?
when GFR <30 ml/min
What is the MOA of thiazide diuretics?
Block the Na/Cl cotransporter from the lumen into the tubular epithelium in the distal convoluted tubule
