Diuretics Flashcards
Purpose
reduce hypertension and decrease edema
Types
thiazide (thiazide-like), loop, osmotic, carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, potassium-sparing
Kidney function
excrete water then take more in
thiazide+-like
acts on distal convoluted renal tubules
promotes sodium, chloride, and water excretion
thiazide+-like use
hypertension
peripheral edema (output>input)
thiazide+-like side effects
dizziness, headaches, hypotension, urticaria, GI distress, constipation, electrolytes impalance
thiazide+-like contraindications
renal failure
thiazide+-like drug interactions
digoxin, lithium, antihypertensives
decrease BP because peeing more
30-35 ml of urine/hr
thiazide+-like diabetes concern
increase glucose
thiazide+-like recognize cues
asses vital signs, weight, urine output
Loop diuretics
acts on ascending loop of Henle
excrete sodium, water, potassium, calcium, magnesium
Loop diuretics side effects
muscle cramps, hyperuricemia, hearing loss, metabolic alkalosis
Loop diuretics analyze cues
fluid overload, hypertension-edema + hypertension decrease
Loop diuretics take action
administer IV furosemide slowly
fast = hearing loss
Osmotic diuretics
increase sodium reabsorption
excrete sodium (norm 7-15), chloride, potassium, water
