5 symptoms + depressed mood/anhedonia for 2 weeks
“SIG E CAPS”: Sleep (hyper/hyposomnia), Interest, Guilt, Energy, Concentration, Appetite, Psychomotor retardation/agitation, Suicidal ideation
Features of atypical depression
Hypersomnia, hyperphagia, mood reactivity, hypersensitivity to rejection
Rx for atypical depression
SSRIs
Risk factors for suicide
“SAD PERSONS”: Sex (m), Age (teens and elderly), Depression, Prev attempts, EtOH, Rational thinking (decr), Sickness, Organized plan, No social support, Stated future intent
What is dysthymia
milder form of depression for at least 2 yrs
MOA of SSRIs
blocks reuptake of 5-HT
MOA of SNRIs
blocks reuptake of 5-HT and NE
MOA of TCAs
blocks reuptake of NE and 5-HT
MOA of MAOIs
inhibits MAO (which breaks down catecholamines, incl NE)
What is the MAOI washout period?
wait 2 wks after stopping MAOI before taking anything else
