Distinctive Landscapes 2 Flashcards
How are headlands created
When some types of rocks are more resistant to erosion than others
What is a stack
An isolated rock that’s separate from headland
What is salt weathering
The breakdown of rock caused by the build up of salt crystals deposited in cracks by waves
What is deposition
Is when material being carried by water is dropped
What is a constructive wave
A wave that deposits more material than they erode
What is swash
What movement of water up the beach
Give two features of a constructive wave
Low and long
Powerful swash
Give a few reasons why rivers deposit material
-If volume of water in the river falls
-Amount of eroded material in the river increases
What is a spit
Beaches that stick out into sea
What is a flood plain
Is the wide valley floor on either side of a river which is most likely to flood
What happens when a river floods onto a flood plain
The water deposits the eroded material that’s its transporting onto the flood plain which makes it higher.
How are river levees creates
When a river floods onto a flood plain, the heaviest material is deposited closest to the river which overtime builds up creating levees.
What is a gorge
Overtime a water fall retreats as the more undercutting causes more collapses leaving behind a gorge
How does a waterfall retreat
When the hard rock of a water fall is eventually eroded it becomes unsupported and collapses.
How is e v shaped valley formed
In the upper course of a river, fast flowing water causes loose particles and boulders to be transported down the river which scrapes along the river bed. This causes downwards erosion by abrasion.
