Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation Flashcards
1
Q
DIC
A
Is a disorder characterized by systemic activation of the clotting cascade with micro thrombi formation, platelet consumption, and subsequent exhaustion of all clotting factors, which causes hemorrhagic manifestations
2
Q
Causes of DIC
A
Sepsis Malignancies Acute traumatic coagulopathy Ob complications Acute pancreatitis
3
Q
DIC Labs
A
Thrombocytopenia
Prolonged PT and aPTT
Decreased fibrinogen
Increased D-dimmer

A
Petechiae, purpura, ecchymosis
Oozing of blood from surgical wounds, IV

Thrombotic manifestations: Acute renal failure Hepatic dysfunction ARDS Pulmonary thromboembolism DVT
5
Q
Management of DIC
A
Treat the underlying cause
Supportive therapy
Transfusions of platelet concentrates, FFP
Increasing fibrinogen levels is a sign of successful treatment
