Dissection 2 Flashcards
Forms the anterior wall of the axilla and its lower border is contained in the inferior edge of the anterior axillary fold
Pectoralis mjor
Main muscles of climbing
Pectoralis major and latissimus dorsi
Important accessory muscle of inspiration
Pec major
Main muscle of posterior wall of axilla and its lateral border is contained in the inferior edge of the posterior axillary fold
Latissimus dorsi (teres major also contributes to the posterior wall of the axilla; its inferior border corresponds to the inferior extent of the axilla)
How does the subclavian vein reach the root of the neck from the axilla?
Over the first rib and under the clavicle
Where does the subclavian drain into the internal jugular vein?
Posterior to the sternoclavicular joint
When does the subclavian vein become the axillary vein?
At the lateral border of the first rib
When is the axillary vein renamed the brachial vein?
At the lower border of teres major
Where can you palpate pulsations of the subclavian artery?
Where the artery crosses the first rib
remember the subclavian artery becomes the axillary artery at the lateral border of the first rib
How can you locate the medial, lateral and posterior cords of the brachial plexus?
They are around the axillary artery!
Superior trunk
Combined anterior rami of C5 and C6
Middle trunk
Anterior ramus of C7
Inferior trunk
Combined anterior rami of C8 and T1
Ulnar nerve comes from which cord
Medial cord
Musculocutaneous nerve comes from which cord?
Lateral cord
Posterior cord divides into which nerves?
Axillary and radial
Medial and lateral cords both contribute the formation of which nerve?
Median
Where would you find the roots and the trunks?
These lie mainly between the anterior and middle scalene muscles in the root of the neck
Where would you find the divisions?
These lie immediately posterior to the subclavian vessels in the root of the neck (deep to the clavicle)
Where do the cords lie?
These lie around the axillary artery, which is distal to the first rib
Where can you see the musculocutaneous nerve emerging?
Emerges from the corachobrachialis
Nerve supply to corachobrachialis
Musculocutaneous nerve
Nerve supply to the biceps brachii
Musculocutaneous nerve
Nerve supply to the brachialis muscle
Musculocutaneous nerve
Lies superior to the radial nerve and wraps around the posterior aspect of the surgical neck of the humerus
Axillary nerve
Nerve which may be damaged in mid-shaft humeral fracture
Axillary nerve
How could you locate median artery really easily?
It forms the middle of the “M shape”
How could you locate median nerve really easily?
It forms the middle of the “M shape”
