Intermittent Explosive Disorder
General description
Recurrent behavioral outbursts (out of proportion)

Failure to control aggressive impulses (2x/week for 3 months)
- Verbal aggression (tantrums, arguments)
- Physical agression towards others, animals, property
OR
- Behavioral outbursts w/ damage of property and/or physical assault involving physical injuries within 12-mo. period
Intermittent Explosive Disorder
Treatment
- SSRI
- Mood stabilizers
- Second generation antipsychotics
- CBT - helps patients identify stressors that trigger outbursts

- Pyromania - deliberate and purposeful fire setting
- Kleptomania - failure to resist urges to steal
- Internet Addiction - excessive or poorly controlled computer use that leads to impairment/distress
- Compulsive shopping - irresistible urge to buy unneed or unwanted items
Oppositional Defiant Disorder
Description
Recurrent pattern of angry/irritable mood, argumentative/defiant behavior persisting for at least 6 months
For 5 years and younger, behavoir must occur on most days for a period of 6 months
Older than 5 years, behavior should occur 1x/week for 6 months
Oppositional Defiant Disorder
Symptoms
At least 4 symptoms lasting 6 months:
- Angry/Irritable mood (often)
- Argumentative/Defiant behavior (often)
- Argues with authority figures
- Blames others for his/her mistakes
- Vindictiveness
Most commonly comorbid w/ ADHD and conduct disorder
ODD associated w/ inc. risk of suicide risk.
Conduct Disorder
Description
4 main categories
Repetitive and persistant behavior pattern in which basic rights of others or major age-appropriate social norms/rules violated
- Aggressive conduct to people/animals
- Destruction of property
- Deceitfulness or theft
- Serious rule violations (runaway, truancy)
Conduct Disorder
Symptoms
3 or more of 15 symptoms have to be present during past 12 months and at least 1 in past 6 months
- Agression to people and animals
- Often bullies, threatens, intimidates
- Often initiates fights
- Has been physically cruel to people and animals
- Has used a weapon that can cause serious physical harm to others
- Has forced someone into sexual activities
- Has stolen while confronting a victim
- Has deliberately engaged in fire setting
- Has deliberately destroyed property of others
- Has broken into someone’s house or car
- Often lies to obtain goods or favors or to avoid obligation
- Has stolen items (shoplifting)
- Often stays out at night despite prohibitions (beginning before age 13)
- Has run away from home overnight at least twice
- Is often truant from school, beginning before age 13 years
