Oppositional Defiant Disorder
Age inappropriate stubborn, hostile, and defiant behaviour.
A. 4+ symptoms for at least 6 months, to _>_1 individual (not sibling)
Angry/Irritable mood
Argumentative/defiant behaviour
Vindictiveness
B. Impairment in functioning
C. Not during psychosis or mood disorders
1/4 “lose” diagnosis after a few years.
Comorbid with ADHD.
Epidemiology of ODD
Appears by age 8 with a second peak at age 14-15
Prevalence is 3%
M>F in early childhood but equal in teens

Prognosis depends on severity and family functioning
M>F progress to CD, especially with aggression
Etiology of ODD
Tempermental factors combined with parenting practices (eg. timidness)
Extreme behaviour causes parents to back down in an argument (behaviourists)
Treatment of ODD
1st line is psychosocial interventions - parent management therapy
Medications only to treat comorbidities OR if psychosocial interventions fail OR emergency behavioural situations

Destruction of property
Deceitfulness or theft
Serious violation of rules
Epidemiology of Conduct Disorder
Prevalence 1-10%
M>F
Males show increase in violence while females show increase in social ostracism and verbal bullying and intimidation.
Comorbid with ADHD
25% progress to antisocial personality disorder.
