How does self-esteem effect conformity?
Those with low self-esteem don’t think highly of themselves so rely on others’ approval, so they are more likely to conform. To raise their self-esteem they attempt to fit in - by conforming.
What is an internal locus of control?
The belief that ours lives can be controlled by our own actions.
What is an external locus of control?
The belief that our lives are controlled by external factors.
How do locuses of control affect our behaviour in crowds?
Those with internal locuses of control are more likely to oppose a crowd as they believe they have control. Those with external locuses of control are more influenced by crowds as they belief they cannot control their lives.
Define morality.
A sense of what is right and wrong.
How does morality effect behaviour?
Those with higher morality are more likely to behave more pro-socially.
What is the superego?
A subconscious part of our personality that represents rules and expectations of our society.
What is our id?
An unconscious part of our personality with sexual and aggressive urges.
What causes low morality?
Damage to the prefrontal cortex, those with low morality have weak superego and their id dominates.
What is an authoritarian personality?
Someone who is more prone to obeying.
How does an authoritarian personality affect conformity?
Those with an authoritarian personality are more likely to conform.
What are some criticisms of dispositional factors?
It is difficult to make predictions on when people will obey, harder to test than situational factors as they are subjective, they are innate.
