Bickman et al Flashcards
B - Aim
To investigate the degree of social power associated with different uniforms.
B - Type
Field experiment
B - Design
Independent measures
B - Hypothesis

B - Sample
Opportunity sampling, 153 New York pedestrians, aged between 18-61.
B - IV
The confederate’s uniform, either a guard, a milkman, or a civilian.
B - DV
Whether participants obeyed or not.
B - Procedure
On weekday afternoons, the sample were approached and asked to either pick up a paper bag, give a dime to a stranger, or stand on the other side of the bus stop. All confederates were young, white males.
B - Results
Regardless of the scenario, people obeyed significantly more to the guard.
B - Conclusion
Proved importance of situational factors, demonstrated social power of authoritative uniform.
B - Criticisms
Lacks control of extraneous variables, culturally biased sample, ethical concerns such as lack of consent, sample is also biased as confederates chose who to approach, gender bias in that all confederates were male.
