water becomes trapped in earwax and becomes a growth medium for bacteria

what is otitis media?
middle ear infection associated with collection of fluid or pus
what are the different types of otitis media?
acute OM

what is the first line of tx for otitis media?
amoxicillin
what is the second line of tx for otitis media?
augmentin
what is the 3rd line of tx for otitis media?
omnicef
what is the 4th line of tx for otitis media?
Rocephin injections
what warrants a child to have ear tubes placed?
6 or more infection in 1 year
risk factors for otitis media?
boys more than girls 6m-2yrs of age non-breast fed lying flat for feedings exposure to cigarette smoke pacifier use beyond infancy family hx allergies craniofacial anomalies ( cleft palate, down syndrome)
clinical manifestations of otits media
ear pain (otalgia) irritable holds or pulls on ear may roll head from side to side may have fever up to 104 can cause ruptured tympanic membrane
if a child has chronic ear infections it can cause
hearing loss
what is the drug of choice for otitis media?
amoxicillin
chronic otitis media treatment
PE tubes ( Pressure equalization tympanostomy tubes)
what can a child not do with ear tubes?
dive, jump, prolonged submersion
can swim but need ear plugs
avoid swimming in lakes and rives
avoid ear pressure postop
what is an expected finding with ear tubes
drainage from ears
tubes will fall out on their own
