What is agoraphobia?
The fear of crowds, travel (usually alone on trains or buses) or events away from home
What are social phobias?
Fear of times when you will be minutely observed. It is characterised by fear of scrutiny by other people
What is a simple phobia?
Umbrella term for phobias restricted to specific situations e.g. arachnophobia (fear of spiders)
What are the key features of conversion disorder?
- Loss or motor or sensory function
- Patient is not feigning symptoms or malingering
What are the key features of somatisation disorder?
- Multiple physical symptoms present for at least 2 years
- Patient refuses to accept reassurance or negative test results
What are the key features of illness anxiety disorder/hypochondriasis?
- Persistent belief in the presence of an underlying serious disease e.g. cancer
- Patient refuses to accept reassurance or negative test results
What is factitious disorder also known as?
Munchausen’s syndrome
