Disorders And Diseases Flashcards
Acquired deficits
Neuropsychological syndromes seen after brain damage
Epilepsy
Uncontrolled electrical discharge is brain
Rapidly spreads to all regions, though often begins lateralised
Causes:
Could be brain damage at birth
Could represent imbalance in excitatory and inhibitory pathways of brain
Cerebro-vascular disorders
Leas to localized loss of brain’s blood supply
I.e. Strokes and cerebral hemorrhages
Alexia with agraphia
Inability to read or write
Global aphasia
Problems with both production (speech) and comprehension
Broca’s and Wernicke’s area both destroyed
Schizophrenia
Biological disorder
Drugs only suppress
- block SA receptors (DA antagonist) - thus, decreases DA neurotransmissions in brain - thus, induces Parkinson's line symptoms
Caused by over activity in DA pathways
Alexia
Complete loss of reading
Alexia without agraphia
Can write coherently, but cannot read it back
Pure word blindness
Parkinson’s Disease
Degeneration of nigro-striatal pathway (a DA pathway)
Don’t know what causes it
