Brain regions Flashcards
Angular gyrus
Key region for reading and writing
On borders of the parietal and temporal lobes
Arcuate fasciculus
Fasciculus - bundle
Pathway connecting Wernicke’s area to Broca’s area
Wernicke’s area
Temporal lobe (top of left)
Vital for comprehension of auditory and visual input
Damaged = receptive/sensory aphasia
-can speak properly, but little to do with context
Amygdala
Functions as alarm system, evaluating contents of various inputs and detecting whether it’s emotionally significant
If significant, processes inside Amygdala activate other brain sites (i.e. Hippocampus) that are crucial for establishing LT memories
Thus, emotional arousal -> more complete and longer lasting memories
Corpus callosum
Bundle of 250 million axons traveling across brain, connecting sites in one side with equivalent sites in other
Function: allows transmission of info from 1 sensory side to other
Right hemisphere functions
Visuo-spatial
Basic ability to comprehend simple, concrete nouns
Negative emotions
Perceiving and interpreting other’s emotions
Ventromedial region
One area that tells us to stop feeding
Hypothalamus
Crucial region that governs ANS
Located at base of forebrain
Body’s thermostat - control centre for feeding
Left hemisphere functions
Self-report (conscious awareness is usually verbal)
Positive emotions
Pituitary gland
Hormonal regulations
Broca’s area
In base of frontal lobe
Cognitive
Memory, language, perception, attention, learning, thought
