Diseases of the galbladder Flashcards
Prevalence of diseases of the galbladder
- More common in women than men
- ↑ risk with obesity (high fat diets, highly processed foods)
- ↑ risk with multi-parity (more than one baby)
Describe cholelithiasis
gallstones
* usually formed from cholesterol and bile salt
* Gallbladder is a storage vesicle and with inflammation it can get really inflamed and excess bile salts can become stones
Complications of cholelithiasis
Usually have disease with liver, pancreas or GI and this is secondary
* asymptomatic
* inflammation of the gallbladder
* obstruction of the bile duct
Describe Cholecystitis
Inflammation of the gallbladder
* usually from gall stones
* not infectious source
Symptoms of Cholelithiasis/Cholecystitis
Acute abdominal pain
* usually associated with eating (stimulates gallbladder to contract and push’s on the stone in the way which can cause more damage
* nausea/ vommiting
Treatment for gallbladder disease
Cholelithotrypsy
* laser degradation of gallstones
Cholecystectomy
* removal of the gallbladder
* most people function normally (bile duct of liver takes over functions of gallbladder)
Diseases of the Gall Bladder Nutrition Care
Usually prescribed until medical treatment can take place (gall bladder surgery usually not emergency)
often teaching prior to discontinued care
* low fat diet
* individual restrictions as required
* weight loss - normalize or reduce(should have ongoing monitoring and follow-up)
* clear fluids during attack (slow progression after symptoms subside)
What have epidemiological studies shown?
Increased risk of gallstones with
* High intake of carbohydrates and foods high on the glycemic index
* High plasma homocysteine conc’n
* High intake of trans fatty acids
Decreased risk of gallstones with:
* Frequent nut consumption
Without clinical trials it is not known whether these associations are causations.
