Describe cholelithiasis

A

gallstones
* usually formed from cholesterol and bile salt
* Gallbladder is a storage vesicle and with inflammation it can get really inflamed and excess bile salts can become stones

Complications of cholelithiasis

A

Usually have disease with liver, pancreas or GI and this is secondary
* asymptomatic
* inflammation of the gallbladder
* obstruction of the bile duct

Describe Cholecystitis

A

Inflammation of the gallbladder
* usually from gall stones
* not infectious source

Symptoms of Cholelithiasis/Cholecystitis

A

Acute abdominal pain
* usually associated with eating (stimulates gallbladder to contract and push’s on the stone in the way which can cause more damage
* nausea/ vommiting

Treatment for gallbladder disease

A

Cholelithotrypsy
* laser degradation of gallstones

Cholecystectomy
* removal of the gallbladder
* most people function normally (bile duct of liver takes over functions of gallbladder)

Diseases of the Gall Bladder Nutrition Care

A

Usually prescribed until medical treatment can take place (gall bladder surgery usually not emergency)

often teaching prior to discontinued care
* low fat diet
* individual restrictions as required
* weight loss - normalize or reduce(should have ongoing monitoring and follow-up)
* clear fluids during attack (slow progression after symptoms subside)

What have epidemiological studies shown?

A

Increased risk of gallstones with
* High intake of carbohydrates and foods high on the glycemic index
* High plasma homocysteine conc’n
* High intake of trans fatty acids

Decreased risk of gallstones with:
* Frequent nut consumption

Without clinical trials it is not known whether these associations are causations.
