The role of VNs in dermatology cases?
gain dermatology history
taking and reporting findings
explaining and supporting dietary trials
explaining, demonstrating and/or administering treatments
educating allergy symptoms, avoidance techniques and clinics
what is a pyoderma?
signs and causes?
a bacterial skin disease
signs
- reddening
- pustules
- exudative lesions
- scabs/crusts
causes
often secondary to other disorders
- staphylococcus intermedius
- proteus pseudomonas - lips/ears - spreads when cleaning eachother

- pasturella - cat bites
different types of pyoderma? examples?
surface
- skin fold dermatitis
- acute moist dermatitis

- insect bites
- plants/nettles
- drug sensitivity - blood transfusion
- inhalation, ingestion or direct contact
Signs:
- areas of erythema and oedema
- usually pruritic
Treatment:
- corticosteroids
- antihistamines
- allergy testing
- remove trigger
food hypersensitivity
symptoms? treatment?
causes puritis, GI problems and secondary skin disorders due to self-trauma
- often ears/face, feet and skin
treatment
- elimination diets used
- eg hypoallergenic food
- can stay on this diet or introduce individual food types until the cause is found
hormonal alopecia
causes? symptoms? treatment?
most endocrine disorders cause bilateral alopecia
- eg hypothyroidism and hyperadrenocorticism
symptoms
- bilateral alopecia
- dully/dry hair
- thin/inelastic skin -
- seborrhoea
- slow hair re-growth
- pyoderma
- hyperpigmentation
treatment
- bloods to cover all endocrine bases
- treat underlying cause
how do ectoparasites contribute to skin diseases?
signs and treatment?
many parasites cause disease but most common is the flea
signs
- puritis
- skin reaction - reaction to flea’s saliva which is injected as they bite
- papules and scabs
- alopecia
treatment
- treat for parasite
- clean environment
- treat skin infections - antibiotics/steroids
what is dermatophytosis?
signs and treatment?
fungal dermatitis/infection - ringworm
signs
