Disease transmission Flashcards
Fomite
any object or substance capable of carrying infectious organisms and hence transferring them from one individual to another
Asymptomatic Carrier
A person or organism infected with an infectious disease by displays no symptoms
Genetic carrier
A person or organism that has inherited a genetic trait or mutation, but displays no symptoms
Vector
an organism, typically a biting insect or tick, that transmits disease or parasite from one animal to another
Reservoirs
any person, animal, arthropod, plant, soil, or substance (or combination of these) in which an infectious agent normally lives and multiplies, on which it depends primarily for survival, and where it reproduces itself in such a manner that it can be transmitted to a susceptible host
Direct contact
the disease causing microbe is passed from one animal to the another when their bodies touch is some way
Indirect contact
There wis no direct contact. contact occurs from a reservoir to contaminated surfaces or object or to vectors
Vertical transmission
happens when microorganisms pass from a mother to her foetus through the placenta
Horizontal transmission
when microorganisms pass from one person to another by touching, kissing or sexual intercourse
Vehicle-borne transmission
involves an object carrying the disease-causing microorganism
Vector-borne transmission
involves an animal such as an insect
Convalescent carrier
animals that have recovered from the disease but secrete the pathogen, particularly when they are stressed
Healthy carriers
animals that have apparently never had the disease and may be immune to it.
incubation period
time between the entry of the pathogen into the body and the development of symptoms
zoonosis
disease transferable from animal to human
