Disease
A condition in which the presence of an abnormality of the body causes a loss of normal function
The abnormality may be structural or functional
Acute disease
Disease that has a rapid onset but is not always followed by a rapid resolution
Chronic disease
Disease that may or may not follow an acute initial episode and has a prolonged course lasting months or years
Benign tumour
A tumour that remains localised and is rarely fatal
Malignant tumour
A tumour that spreads away from its origin and is commonly fatal

Diseases that are wholly caused by environmental factors
