Disease Flashcards
What are pathogens and give examples?
Organisms that can cause disease e.g bacteria and viruses
What are infectious diseases caused by and how can they be passed and examples?
Caused by pathogens and can be passed from person to person e.g TB, malaria and HIV
What is a genetic defect give example?
Diseases caused by mutations in a person’s genes e.g cystic fibrosis is cause by a mutation in a gene for a protein
What can certain lifestyles do and example?
Increase the risk of getting some diseases e.g smokers are more likely to get lung cancer
List 3 things disease can be caused by
- Pathogens
- Genetic defects
- Lifestyle
What is a risk factor and give example?
Something that increases the chances of something bad happening e.g smoking is a risk factor for heart disease - if you smoke, you’re more likely to get heart disease
Do risk factors always lead to disease? Give example
Nope e.g using sun beds is a risk factor for skin cancer - if you use sun beds you increase your risk of skin cancer, but you wont necessarily get the disease
Why are some risk factors unavoidable? Give example
Because they’re inherited e.g certain versions of genes increase your risk of getting breast cancer
Why are some risk factors avoidable? Give example
Because they’re associated with your lifestyle e.g a diet high in salt is a risk factor for high blood pressure - if you change your lifestyle to reduce your salt intake, you reduce the risk
Common lifestyle risk factors and diseases they’re associated with
