What to do when child client does not speak our language

A

1) try to find an interpreter with the same ethnic background as child.
2) train interpreter on proper behavior and develop a plan that ensures connection with child. Train them to take the right steps.
3) Follow typical pragmatic protocols with child (looking at them when speaking)

Important factors to look at before meeting client

A

1) get a good case history.
2) look at the differences of language and speech compared to us.
3) Don’t treat them any differently (code of ethics).
4) Know cultural background.
5) Self-reflect on our own biases.
6) Know health statistic of their race.
7) Look for appropriate testing material.
8) If needed, get an interpreter.
