What are the 3 types of communication?
Phatic, transactional, referential.
What is phatic communication?
Social interaction, greetings, it is language that builds relationships
What is transactional language?
Language used for swapping information between people.
What is referential communication?
Language used where info is either gained or given by someone else.
What is a false start in discourse?
Where the speaker stops what they’re saying and starts again.
What is an overlap in discourse?
When the speaker accidentaly begins their turn before the other speaker has finished.
What is a reformulation in discourse?
Where we change what we are saying part way through an utterance
What is mirroring in discourse?
The speaker uses the same words / phrases as the person they’re communicating with.
What is standard English?
The formal spoken + written form of English.
