Disaster Flashcards
START
simple triage and rapid treatment
RPM assessment
Respirations >30
Perfusion (cap refill) >2
Mental Status CAN DO follow simple commands
Ambulatory
all ambulatory patients are considered minor and should be moved to minor treatment area where they receive treatment
Non-ambulatory
Assessed using RPM assessment
Medical treatment during triage is limited to…
open airway
stop bleeding
elevate extremities
CPR not attempted
Red
Immediate
patient is unable to physiologically compensate with the injury sustained unless an intervention is entertained rapidly
outside RPM parameters
go to OR or ICU
Yellow
Delayed
patient can fully compensate physiologically, meaning their physiologic compensatory mechanisms are intact but generally are unable to ambulate. but may loose the compensatory mechanism at any time
within RPM parameters
Green
Minor
all physiologic compensatory mechanisms are intact and the are able to ambulate.
Black
Deceased/non-salvageable
brain matter showing, a gunshot wound to the head with parameters outside of the physiologically compensated range
If death has not occurred but expected to occur then palliative care is appropriate to include relief of pain, administration of oxygen, and other non-invasive interventions that can be delivered.
Triage facts
80% self refer
20% arrive by ems
1/3 black red or yellow
2/3 yellow and green
START step 1
move anyone who can walk to minor area and green tag them
START step 2
Assess respirations
if 30 or less move to step 3
if greater than 30 tag as red
if apneic, open airway, if patient remains apneic, tag as black
START step 3
Assess capillary refill or radial pulse
if 2 or less, move to step 4
if greater than 2, tag as red
START step 4
Assess mental status
if they follow commands tag as yellow
if unable to follow commands tag as red
Jump START
newborn to 8 years
