disadvantages of parliamentary law making Flashcards
statement (1)
a disadvantage is political influence is that government can push through any law
point (1)
this is because the government normally have a comfortable majority they can force through their own political incentives e.g health and social care act 2012 did not appear in the Conservative Party manifesto and yet the government passed it despite opposition by other political parties
develop (1)
in addition, there is difficulty for a private for a private members bill to have a fair hearing and they usually fail at the 2nd reading stage
extended point (1)
furthermore, unless PMB’s have government support, they are usually not successful due to the fact they are selected by ballot and can be filibusted
statement (2)
a disadvantage of pressure groups such as larger pressure groups and interest groups is bias
point (2)
this is because they are quite powerful and extremely influential and it is difficult for small pressure groups to match their influence
develop (2)
in addition, interest groups such as CBI are serving the interest of its members e.g large multinationals such as oil companies have more direct contact with MP’S
extended point (2)
this means that large corporations can influence policy law in relation to tax and the environment over a cause group such as an environment group
statement (3)
a disadvantage of the media is that the aim is to make profit
point (3)
this is because the newspapers are commercial businesses and may be prepared to sensationalise an issue to expand their readership e.g when reporting on immigration headlines using words such as “swarm” exaggerates the truth but will sell
develop (3)
in addition this can be seen as parts of the media manipulating the news and creating public opinion. furthermore such headlines can also create moral panic like the dangerous dogs act 1991
extended point (3)
the problem with this is that the bill is then rushed through with mistakes
