advantages of parliamentary law making Flashcards
statement (1)
the government as an influence is an example of democratic process
point (1)
this is because governments are elected by public in a general election as a result of what they publish in the manifesto and so respond e.g conservative party manifesto in 2019 was to “get Brexit” done and when they are elected they passed the withdraw from EU act 2020
develop (1)
in addition, if the government wish to be re-elected they will rarely pass unpopular law so may pass laws to reduce tax
extended point (1)
furthermore, where there is an emergency the government will respond quickly e.g the anti terrorism security act 2001
point (2)
this is because pressure from the media can force the government to act
statement (2)
the media is an advantage as it can raise government awareness of public opinion
develop (2)
an example of this would be the snowdrop campaign and the daily mail’s continuous coverage and support of it. This campaign raised government awareness of how the law on ownership of firearms was not restrictive as a result of firearms (amendment) act 1997
extended point (2)
as a result the law was passed possibly more quickly because of the media engaging the public
statement (3)
a further advantage of political influence is the flexibility
point (3)
this is because individual MP’s and lords are able to introduce a bill in parliament called private member’s bills
develop (3)
as a result these can be useful if the government does not want to introduce controversial legislation due to fear of losing popularity. This was seen in the passing of the abortion act 1967 by David steele but supported by the government of the day
extended point (3)
in addition it allows for laws which are representative of sections of society to be heard where the government may not have time to consider e.g Rosie Cooper MP and the British sign language act 2022
