if commons amend bill, lords must consider them, either agree disagree or make alternative proposals
if lords disagree with commons amendments or make alternative proposals, bill sent back
continues until both houses make agreement
royal assent
bill given final approval by monarch under royal assent act 1967
formality now performed by speakers from commons & lords
bill becomes act of parliament, come into force on specific date
