disaccharides Flashcards
examples of disaccharides
lactose and sucrose
what’s a disaccharide
formed when two monosaccharides are joined by a glycosidic bond during a condensation reaction.
what does alpha glucose and fructose form
sucrose, alpha 1-4 glycosidic bond
what does alpha glucose and alpha glucose form
maltose, alpha 1-4 glycosidic bond
what does beta glucose and alpha glucose form
lactose , beta 1-4 glycosidic bond
what does beta glucose and beta glucose form
cellobiose , beta 1-4 glycosidic bond.
what happens when two monosaccharides become a disaccharide
a condensation reaction occurs to form a glycosidic bond .The two hydroxyl(-OH) groups line up next to each other from which a water molecule is removed , this leaves an oxygen atom acting as a link between the two monosaccharide units .
how are disaccharides broken into monosaccharides
by a hydrolysis reaction which requires the addition of water. The water provides a hydroxyl group (-OH) and a hydrogen (-H) which helps the glycosidic bond to break
