Disaccharides Flashcards
sugars composed of 2 monosaccharides
Disaccharide
join monosaccharides
or sugar chains to other carbohydrates, forming disaccharides, oligosaccharides and polysaccharides. It is a type of covalent bond.
GLYCOSIDIC BOND/LINKAGE
Common Disaccharides
❑ MALTOSE
❑ CELLOBIOSE
❑ LACTOSE
❑ SUCROSE
It is a disaccharide made up of two alpha D glucose in which C1 of first glucose unit is bonded to
C4 of second glucose unit
Maltose
It is a hydrolysis product of cellulose or cellulose-rich materials, such as paper or cotton. It is formed by linking two beta-glucose molecules by a β(1→4) bond.
Cellobiose
Major sugar found in milk (milk sugar). It is formed from monosaccharides β -D-galactose and β -D- glucose β (1→4) linkage
Lactose
It is table sugar. It is purified from sugar cane or sugar beets. It involves the formation of the alpha D-glucose and the beta -D-fructose
α, β ( 1→2) glycosidic linkage
