BIOCHEMICALLY IMPORTANT MONOSACCHARIDES Flashcards
six monosaccharides that are important in the functioning of the human body
❑Trioses (D-glyceraldehyde and D-dihydroxyacetone)
❑D-glucose
❑D-galactose
❑D-fructose
❑D-Ribose
These two trioses are important intermediates in the process of glycolysis.
Trioses (D-glyceraldehyde and D-dihydroxyacetone)
Of all monosaccharides, it is the most abundant in nature and the most important from a human nutritional standpoint. Ripe fruits are good sources.
D glucose
It is called brain sugar – it is component of glycoproteins (carbohydrates- proteins compounds) that is found in the brain and nerve proteins.
D-GALACTOSE
It is also present in chemical markers that distinguish various types of blood – A ,B, AB, O.
D-GALACTOSE
Also known as fruit sugar/LEVULOSE. It is the sweetest of all sugars
D-FRUCTOSE
It is is a component of a variety of complex molecules including the RNA, ATP, DNA
D-RIBOSE
