Disability Related Absences Flashcards
How do I determine if attendance is essential to my course?
Consider whether participation is a core requirement:
Essential: Lab work, hands-on training, group discussions, clinical experiences.
Non-Essential: Large lecture courses where participation isn’t graded.
What should I do if attendance is critical?
Discuss potential alternatives with SAS.
How should I handle make-up work for disability-related absences?
Work with the student and SAS to establish reasonable adjustments, such as:
Providing lecture recordings or notes.
Allowing make-up quizzes/exams.
Extending deadlines when appropriate.
What if a student with an attendance accommodation is falling too far behind?
Reach out to SAS to discuss reasonable alternatives.
If excessive absences prevent the student from meeting course requirements, they may need to:
Withdraw from the course.
Explore an Incomplete if they’ve completed most of the work.
Consider other course formats (e.g., online options).
Can I lower a student’s grade for missing class if they have an attendance accommodation?
No. Grades should reflect academic performance, not attendance if flexibility is approved.
However, students are still responsible for meeting the learning outcomes of the course.
