PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT AND RESPONSIBILITY

A

Unsatisfactory performance:

  • Lack of knowledge of the application of laws
  • Unwillingness or inability to perform assigned tasks
  • Failure to conform to work or training standards
  • Failure to take appropriate action
  • Absent without leave or habitual tardiness
  • Repeated poor evaluations
  • Repeated in fractions of directives
  • Negligent discharge

Making a false or untruthful declaration:

  • Will not willingly or knowingly make a false declaration either orally or written
  • intentionally incomplete or untruthful statements made to a supervisor, judicial proceeding, IAS investigation or made for personal gain

Dissemination of information:

  • no member will divulge directly or indirectly the nature or location of any covert surveillance equipment
  • no member will divulge this information in a report and should only refer to it and generic terms
  • Members will not disclose the addresses telephone numbers or information from personal files to the public or media

Neglect of duty:

  • All members are required to take appropriate action toward aiding fellow peace officer exposed to danger or in a situation where danger is impending
  • members will not read, play games, watch TV, or otherwise engage in entertainment while on duty
  • Only command level officers (lieutenants and above) are able to grant a member permission to report late or leave early without the submission of an entry in Telestaff – sergeants serving as an acting lieut. are not granted this authority
  • members will remain awake while on duty. Should a member experience difficulty remaining awake they will report to a supervisor who will determine the proper course of action
  • Members may be permitted to have a meal, however member subject to immediate recall at any time and will be alert to all radio calls

Notification of name, address or telephone change:

  • Members will notify administrative service section in writing of any legal name change, change of address or telephone change
  • All changes will be reported on the personal data change form APD 059. Administrative service section will enter the information into Aurora police personnel system APPS
  • The member is responsible for ensuring their chain of command is aware of any changes
  • When a member reports a legal name change of personnel order will be issued to notify all department personnel of the change

Police-community relations:

  • A member that is aware of any actions, practices or attitudes on the part of any member that may be contributing to community or racial tension should bring the matter to their immediate supervisor
  • The supervisor should make every effort to correct these actions, practices or attitudes at an early stage to ward off a greater problem in the future.
  • If the actions taken by the supervisor not successful, the supervisor should forward the information to their supervisor for solution
  • Members will provide their names, badge or employee numbers when requested by the public. •Members will provide a business card one request

Use of tobacco:

•Members will not use tobacco products while information, when it would be offensive or inappropriate, when in violation of city of Aurora smoking policy, or when engaged in traffic direction

Reporting responsibility:
•Reports submitted will be accurate and complete
•Accidents involving department personnel, property or equipment must be reported according to policy
•When city property is found bearing evidence of damage which has not been reported, it will fall on the responsibility of the last person using the property or vehicle

Identification as a police officer:
•Except when in practical, unfeasible or when their identity is obvious, officers will identify themselves verbally and by displaying an official badge or ID card before taking police action

Testifying as an expert or character witness:
•No member of the department is permitted to offer our volunteer to testify as a character or expert witness for criminal defendant or party engage in litigation with the city of Aurora without prior approval by the chief of police

Use of letterhead:
•Used for official business only

Social networking:
•Employees may not use any drawings, pictures, artwork or other depictions of the Aurora police badge, patch, logo, vehicles or uniforms, or city of Aurora seal or logo on any social networking sites such as Facebook, twitter, etc.
•Any employee who identifies themselves as an employee of the city or Police Department on a social networking site shall be responsible for all posting this on that site and will be subject to discipline for violations
•Any postings in violation of this section must be removed immediately
