Parietal
Lines the cavity wall.
It does not directly touch the organs.
- The parietal pleura lines the ribcage
Visceral
Refers to the inner layer of a membrane that directly covers an organ.
The visceral pleura covers the surface of the lungs.
Thoracic cavity
RELATED to the chest cavity.
contains the lungs, heart, esophagus, and major blood vessels.
The thoracic cavity is protected by the ribcage
Intrathoracic
INSIDE the thoracic cavity
The intrathoracic pressure changes during breathing.
Abdominal
Related to the abdominal cavity.
contains the stomach, intestines, liver, kidneys, and spleen.
The abdominal muscles protect the belly.
Intraabdominal
INSIDE the abdominal cavity.
Intraabdominal fat surrounds the intestines
