Directional Terms to Describe Position of Anatomical Structures Flashcards
Bipeds
Two-footed animals
Quadrupeds
Four-footed animals
4 major directional terms for bipeds
- Superior
- Inferior
- Anterior
- Posterior
Superior (bipeds)
Upper region of body
Inferior (bipeds)
Lower region of body
Anterior (bipeds)
Front or leading area of the animal
Posterior (bipeds)
Back or trailing area of the animal
4 major directional terms for quadrupeds
- Cranial
- Caudal
- Dorsal
- Ventral
Cranial (quadrupeds)
Towards the head
Caudal (quadrupeds)
Towards the tail
Dorsal (quadrupeds)
Toward or beyond the backbone
Ventral (quadrupeds)
Away from backbone or toward the belly
Rostral (quadrupeds)
Toward the nose (structures within the animals head)
- use caudal for towards the tail
4 Planes
- Median
- Sagittal
- Transverse
- Frontal
Median (midsagittal) Plane
Divides body into equal right and left hemispheres
- plane through body craniocaudally
Sagittal Plane
Any plane that is parallel to the median plane
Transverse Plane
Plane that divides body into cranial and caudal segments
- cross section
Frontal (horizontal) Plane
Plane that divides body into dorsal and ventral segments (upper and lower)
Medial
Close or near the median plane
Lateral
Away form median plane
Proximal
Area nearest to point of origin/attachment of body part (limb)
Distal
Area furthest from point of origin/attachment of body part (limb)
Deep
Farther from surface
Superficial
Closer to surface
