superior
above the head is superior to the neck
inferior
below the neck is inferior to the head
anterior (ventral)
close to the front of the body - the lips are anterior to the teeth
posterior (dorsal)
close to the back of the body - the teeth are posterior to the lips
medial
closer to the midline of the body - the nose is medial to the eyes
lateral
farther from the midline of the body - the eyes are lateral to the nose
proximal
nearer to the point of attachment
distal
farther from the point of attachment of the limb or trunk
superficial
closer to the surface of the body - the skin is superficial to the muscle
deep
farther from the surface of the body - the muscles are deep to the skin
frontal plane
plane that divides the body into anterior & posterior sections
transverse plane
plane that divides the body into superior & inferior sections
sagittal plane
plane that divides the body into left & right sides
anatomical position
body facing forward with palms facing frontward & thumbs pointed laterally
abdominopelvic cavity
- the cavity that consists of the abdominal cavity & the pelvic cavity
- it contains the stomach, liver, pancreas, spleen, gallbladder, kidneys, & most of the small & large intestines
- it also contains the urinary bladder & internal reproductive organs
